「ダライ・ラマ 思いやりのある生活」その４。地球を救うのは「愛」――それだけ？

「愛は地球を救う」というスローガンがありますが、疑り深い私は、「愛だけでは、
ときにわがままや憎しみを生み出し、人を滅ぼすことさえあるのではないか？」そう
思ってきました。そんなときネットで出会ったのが、ダライ・ラマの「思いやりと
個人」というメッセージです（後述）。そして、今の私に言えるスローガンがあると
すれば、これです。――「愛と思いやりが地球を救う」――思いやりと地球の未来に
関するダライ・ラマの言葉を、バイリンガルでご紹介します。

I believe that at every level of society――familial, national, and international――the key
to happier and more successful world is the growth of compassion. We do not need to
become religious, nor do we need to believe in a particular ideology. All that is necessary
is for each of us to develop our good human qualities. I believe that the cultivation of
individual happiness can contribute in a profound and effective way to the overall
improvement of the entire human community.

家族や国家や国際関係を含め、社会のあらゆるレベルでもっと幸せでいっそう繁栄する
世界になる鍵を握っているのが、思いやりの増大だと私は確信しています。信心深く
なったり、特定のイデオロギーを信奉したりしなくてもよいのです。何より不可欠で
あるのは、互いに人間の素晴らしい資質を高めることです。個人の幸せが深まれば、
人類社会全体を効果的に改善するのに役立つはずです。

We all share an identical need for love, and on the basis of this commonality, it is
possible to feel that anybody we meet, in whatever circumstances, is a brother or sister.
No matter how new the face or how different the dress or behavior, there is no significant
division between us and other people. It is foolish to dwell on external differences
because our basic natures are the same.

人はみな愛情を求める気持ちを共有し、この共通性をかんがみれば、どんな状況で
あろうと出会う人々は誰でも兄弟姉妹だと感じることができます。よく知らない人
でも、どれほど服装や振る舞いが異なっていようが、自分と他者を分けることに大した
意味は全くありません。私たちの基本的な本質は同じなのですから、外見の違いを
あれこれいうのは愚かなことです。

If you reflect deeply enough, it becomes obvious that we need more compassion and
altruism everywhere. This critical point can be appreciated by observing the current state
of affairs in the world, whether in the fields of modern economics and health care, or
in political and military situations.

今や、思いやりと利他主義はどこでも求められています。この重大な局面は、経済状態
や健康管理の面であろうと政治的軍事的状況であろうと、世界の目下の問題に注意を
向ければ、気づくでしょう。

In addition to the multitude of social and political crises, the world is also facing an
ever-increasing cycle of natural calamities. Year after year, we have witnessed a radical
shifting of global climatic patterns that has led to grave consequences; excessive rain
in some countries that has brought serious flooding, a shortage of precipitation in other
countries that has resulted in devastating droughts.

さまざまな社会的政治的危機に加えて、世界は増え続ける天災にも直面しています。
年々、世界の気候パターンの急変により、容易ならぬ結果を招いてきました。ある国
では過剰の降雨量が大洪水を引き起こし、他の国では降雨量が不足して旱魃
（かんばつ）となり、甚大な被害を被っています。

Fortunately, concern for ecology and the environment is rapidly growing everywhere.
We are now beginning to appreciate that the question of environmental protection is
ultimately a question of our very survival on this planet. As human beings, we must also
respect our fellow members of the human family; our neighbors, our friends, and so forth.
Compassion, loving-kindness, altruism, and a sense of brotherhood and sisterhood are
the keys not only to human development, but to planetary survival.

幸い、世界各国で生態学と環境が重視されるようになりました。ここに至って
ようやく、環境保護の問題がこの地球に暮らす私たち人間の生き残りに関わること
なのだと認識され始めたわけです。一人の人間として、私たちは隣人や友人など仲間を
尊重しなければなりません。思いやり、親愛、利他主義、同胞愛の感覚はいずれも人類
の発展だけでなく、地球が生き残るためにも重要な鍵を握っています。

いかがでしたか？かつてビートルズは「愛こそはすべて(All You Need Is Love)」と
全世界に向けた中継で歌い上げましたが、時代は移り、愛がすべてを解決するという
のは、もはや楽天的すぎる考え方になってしまったのかもしれません。冒頭で述べた、
