English for Happiness

f:id:englishforhappiness:20170909064452j:plain

As we already know, the first function of mindfulness is to produce our true presence
and make us alive in the present moment. Sometimes our body is here, but we are not
really here.

Everyone needs mindfulness, and everyone is able to cultivate mindfulness. We breathe,
smile, and bring our body back to our mind and our mind back to our body.

The second function of mindfulness is to recognize that life is already here, that you can
have real contact with it and make it meaningful and deep. When you are present,
life is also present

When you are really present, you are able to recognize the presence of your beloved.
To be loved means to be recognized as existing. It’s very simple.

Only mindfulness can bring her back to life. That is why when you are really present,
you can look at your beloved and declare, “Darling I know you are there, and I am really
happy.” Embraced by your mindfulness, your loved will bloom like a flower. When
two beings are real, there is authentic contact.

The third function of mindfulness is to touch and embrace. This function has two effects:
to receive nourishment and healing, and to provide healing and calming. In this way,
you and your beloved are both nourished. If the object of our mindfulness is fresh,
refreshing, and healing, then we are freshened and healed by that contact, and
vice versa.

The fourth function of mindfulness is concentration. If we are mindful of something,
we can concentrate on it. If we succeed in eating an orange mindfully and
our mindfulness is solid, we can concentrate solely on the orange. We don’t let our mind
wander in other directions, worrying about the past or the future, or taking care of
other things. We do only one thing――we get in touch with the orange.

The fifth function of mindfulness is that when you are concentrated, you can practice
living deeply. The sixth function is looking deeply. The seventh function is that insights
you gain can liberate you. As we continue to practice and generate this energy,
we receive many benefits.

f:id:englishforhappiness:20170907061830p:plain

I said, “Young couples should turn off the television, and instead of looking at the screen,
look at each other.” There is a background to this comment. A famous French writer,
Antoine Saint Exupery, said that to love each other means not to look at each other
but look in the same direction. He may be right, but not if you are looking in the direction
of the television.

I advise the opposite: Turn off the television and look at each other. Then you can ask,
“Darling, are we a happy couple?” That is the real question. Then ask, “If not, why?”
Start looking into your real situation. “We have jobs, a house, a television, everything,
yet we are not happy. We don’t feel at ease looking at each other, so we look at the
television.” That is the first meditation exercise: Turn off the television, look at each other,
and ask the real question. If the couple spends half an hour discussing why they aren’t
happy, then they will see the cause of their unhappiness and be able to work together
toward real happiness.

f:id:englishforhappiness:20170905064628j:plain

(The Path of

The second exercise of mindful breathing proposed by the Buddha is “Long/short.”
“Long/short” means to be aware of the whole length of your in-breath and out-breath.
It does not mean we intentionally make a long in-breath or a short out-breath. It is not
like that. The idea is nonintervention. The object of mindfulness in the first two exercises
proposed by the Buddha is just your breath, your in-breath and out-breath, nothing else.
The effect of these exercises is enormous.

We should not interfere with our breathing. This is very important. We know that
breathing happens by itself. Our practice is to light the lamp of mindfulness and
shine it on our breathing. We do not modify, bend, or make our breathing the way
we want it. We cannot describe the practice as breath work. We are not working
on our breath. We allow our breath to enjoy itself. This is mindfulness of breathing.

It is like the vegetation and the sunshine. The sunshine just embraces the vegetation.
It has an impact on the vegetation, but the work of the sunshine is to shine on the
vegetation and, embracing it. We do the same thing with our breathing. We don’t try
to mold our breathing. We just become aware of our in-breath and out-breath
as our in-breath and out-breath. If our in-breath is short, we let it be short;
if our out-breath is long, we let it be long. We don’t try to make them shorter or longer.

When we touch our breathing with mindfulness, the quality of our breathing improves,
and a feeling of well-being is born in our body and mind. The calm and harmony of
our breathing helps our body be calm and harmonious, too, and the calm and
harmony of our body affects our mind.

f:id:englishforhappiness:20170903071718p:plain

The first exercise of mindful breathing that the Buddha proposed is “In/out.”
It means “Breathing in, I know I am breathing in. Breathing out, I know
I am breathing out.”

In this teaching, we consider our breath as part of our body. Our breathing is
a physical formation. It is the door through which we go home to our self and
reconcile ourselves with our self. The object of our mindfulness is our in-breath
and out-breath, nothing else. We identify our in-breath as our in-breath and
our out-breath as our out-breath. It is easy.

Then, instead of reading to ourselves, “Breathing in, I know I am breathing in,”
we just use the word “in.” When breathing out, we say “out.” The words “in” and “out”
are instruments in order to maintain our mindfulness. While breathing in, we are
aware that we should nourish our in-breath. “In” is no longer a word; it is the reality
of our in-breath. If we do this, all our thinking will stop.

We don’t suppress our thinking at all. There is no effort to stop thinking. If we really
enjoy our in-breath one hundred percent, then thinking suddenly stops. Sometimes
we try to force ourselves to be mindful. That is no good. Mindfulness is very enjoyable.

We breathe so that our in-breath and out-breath are pleasant, so that we are awake
and mindful, and our concentration is strong. If concentration is here, then insight
will be born. Mindfulness, concentration, and insight give birth to one another.
Mindfulness carries the energy of concentration within itself, and concentration
carries the energy of insight within itself.

f:id:englishforhappiness:20170901064316p:plain

Perhaps you have used a seal before. When you stamp a seal onto a piece of paper,
you make sure that the whole seal prints on the paper, so that when you remove
the seal, the image is perfect.

When we practice walking, we do the same thing. Every step we take is like placing
a seal on the ground. Mindfulness is the ink. We print our solidity and peace
on the ground. In our daily lives, we don’t usually walk like that. We print our hurry,
worry, depression, and the anger on the ground. But here, together, we print our solidity,
peace and freedom on the ground.

You know whether you succeed or not with each step. Bring all of your mindfulness
to the soles of your feet and walk. Enjoy every step you take.

Allow plenty of time to walk. Every step can be healing and transforming. Every step can
help you cultivate more solidity, joy and freedom.

Walking meditation is a wonderful way to learn how to live deeply each moment of
our daily life. You will be surprised to find out that, when you return home, it is possible
to implement this practice in the busy city.

f:id:englishforhappiness:20170830054040p:plain

Placing the orange on the palm of our hand, we look at it while breathing in and out,
so that the orange becomes a reality. If we are not here, totally present, the orange
isn’t here either. There are some people who can eat an orange but don’t really eat it.
They eat their sorrow, fear, anger, past and future. They are not really present,
with body and mind united. When you practice mindful breathing, you become
truly present. If you are here, life is also here.

The orange is the ambassador of life. When you look at the orange, you discover that
it is nothing less than a miracle. Visualize the orange as a blossom, the sunshine and
rain passing through it, then the tiny green fruit growing, turning yellow, becoming
orange, the acid becoming sugar. The orange tree took time to create this masterpiece.

When you are truly here, contemplating the orange, breathing and smiling, the orange
becomes a miracle. It is enough to bring you a lot of happiness. You peel the orange,
smell it, take a section, and put it in your mouth mindfully, fully aware of the juice
on your tongue. This is eating an orange in mindfulness. It makes the miracle of life
possible. It makes joy possible.

When we pick up a piece of a vegetable, we look at it for half a second. We look
mindfully to really recognize the piece of food, the piece of carrot or a string bean.
We should know that this is a piece of carrot or a string bean.

We identify it with our mindfulness: “I know this is a piece of carrot. This is a piece of
string bean.” It only takes a fraction of a second. When we are mindful, we recognize
what we are picking up. When we put it into our mouth, we know what we are putting
into our mouth. When we chew it, we know what we are chewing. It’s very simple.

Some of us, while looking at a piece of carrot, can see the whole cosmos in it,
can see the sunshine in it, can see the earth in it. It has come from the whole cosmos
for our nourishment. You may like to smile to it before you put it in your mouth.

When you chew it, you are aware that you are chewing a piece of carrot. Don’t put
anything else into your mouth, like your projects, your worries, your fear, just put
the carrot in. And when you chew, chew only the carrot, not your projects or your ideas.
You are capable of living in the present moment, in the here and the now. It is simple,
but you need some training to just enjoy the piece of carrot. This is a miracle.
